Making public notices accessible

Information that is written for the public needs to be accessible. It should take into account:

  • The style of writing - written in easy English for people with limited literacy skills
  • The amount of print - minimum text supplemented with pictures, photographs and line drawings when needed
  • The content of notices - key points with relevant information only
  • The size of print - large enough to compensate for visual problems
  • The type of print - clear bold text with a contrasting background
  • The format of notices - a single-sided document so that the person does not have to turn pages
  • The placement of notices - at eye-level for people who walk and for those who use a wheel-chair or scooter for mobility
