Workshop title : Free Communication Aids for Adults with Communication Needs

Course content: This practical workshop is designed to support staff working with adults with complex communication needs. The aim is to develop skills in selecting, prescribing and designing appropriate communication aids for people who do not have speech or who are difficult to understand. It will help you to design communication aids that can promote inclusion in community activities and enhance individual choice and participation.

The workshop will cover information on:

  • Communication Stages
  • Selecting Communication Aids – what is out there? E.g Personal communication dictionary, personal history, chat books, communication boards, books and many, many more!
  • Who are they useful for?
  • Why are they used?
  • Designing Communication Aids – the many things to consider!
  • Information on services and schemes that can help you access communication aids e.g. Communication Aids and Resource Materials (CARM); ComTEC; The Non-electronic Communication Aid Scheme (NECAS); Aids and Equipment Program – Electronic Communication Devices Scheme (A&EP-ECD)

Who should attend: Speech pathologists, communication coordinators, direct support workers, case managers.
