Australia Ratifies United Nations Disabilities Convention
Scope welcomes the announcement that Australia has ratified the UN Disability Convention, demonstrating its commitment to upholding and safeguarding the rights of people with a disability.
On Friday July 18, Australia joined 29 other countries in ratifying the Convention in a move that aims to promote a global community in which all people with disability are equal and active citizens.
"By ratifying the UN Disability Convention the Government has sent a clear message about our duty as Australians to ensure that people with disability are treated equally in our society," Scope (VIC) Ltd chief executive officer Diana Heggie said.
“Scope is committed to overcoming all barriers that prevent those with disability from participating in community life and while we have achieved a great deal, there is more that must be done,’’ Ms Heggie said.
``We look forward to working with the Government to help them follow through this ratification with action. Together we will make Australia more inclusive, more accessible and more welcoming for people with disabilities.’’
