The Living History Project
By Ruth Quibell
This project was auspiced by the Association for Children with a Disability, Headway Victoria and Scope Victoria. Ethics approval was provided by the Wesley Central Mission.
Background
It is now more than 20 years since the International Year for Disabled Persons (IYDP 1981), a year that promised a social revolution for people with disabilities. So, what has happened in that period and what has been achieved in Victoria since that time? These are important questions that this anniversary provides an opportunity to explore. The literature reveals that local and international studies of the perceptions of people with disabilities are becoming more common. Yet despite growing research interest in the perceptions of people with disabilities, to date there has been no other study that has explicitly explored what people with disabilities perceive has changed between IYDP 1981 and the present. At a time when much is taken for granted about the lives of people with disabilities, this research offers an important opportunity to explore this issue.
Specifically this study aimed to identify :
- Changes and recursive themes in the lived experiences of Victorian people with disabilities in the period from the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981) to the present
- Changes and recursive themes in the lived experiences of Victorian families and friends who live with a person with a disability in the period from the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981) to the present
- Key Australian and Victorian policy and/or service provider changes that effect people with disabilities, their families and friends in the period from the International Year for Disabled Persons (1981) to the present
