Scope Current Research

We have a number of exciting research projects currently underway. Most of them are profiled here:

The 1-in-4 poll

This project involves a regular poll of over 2000 Australians with disabilities and their families on issues of importance to them. Purpose of the research is to increase understanding of views and needs of people with a disability and their carers; and increasing their capacity to influence social and political processes.

Food Court Friends:
Building relationships between people with disability and the community of the City of
Brimbank

 

This project is designed to research strategies to improve inclusion for people with disabilities in several shopping centres in the western suburbs of Melbourne . A key element of the project is building the capacity of people with disabilities to act as researchers.

Late 2008

Unmet Need for Supported Accommodation for the Children of Ageing Carers

Research to identify the level of unmet need for supported accommodation where ageing carers continue to support their adult child at home. Also aims to determine when carers believe supported accommodation will be needed.

Aids & Equipment: Powering an Inclusive Community: A Collaborative Research Project

A research project conducted under the auspices of the Aids & Equipment Action Alliance, of which Scope is a founding member. Aims to enable development and management of multi-agency universal data collection and analysis to evidence needs, cost burden and impact of existing aids and equipment programs, on people with disabilities in Victoria .

Developing an Organisational Framework for Community
Capacity Building

 

A project initially funded by the State Government’s Department of Human Services to research effective components of inclusion work as part of re-orienting direct service delivery. Aims to develop an organisational or practice framework to support this work.

Evaluation of the Scope Early Childhood Flexible Support Package Program, Eastern Region

Research to explore the effectiveness of the program's processes as experienced by families, the types of life-outcomes associated with program engagement, the extent to which the program is perceived to foster capacity in families and communities, and the range of services and supports that families are requesting.

The Impact of Person Centred Approaches in a Disability Community Group

 

This project will evaluate the process of changing traditional day services to a more individualised and person centred approach for the Scope Community Group. The research will explore the outcomes for clients while identifying the enablers and barriers to successful person-centred practice. Central to the research will be the development of a method to document the outcomes of person centred plans within day service settings.

 

Mid 2009

Scope Oral Health Project – Barwon Region

Research to explore strategies to:
1. Build the capacity of Direct Support staff in meeting the oral hygiene needs of the people with disability.
2. Develop the capacity of Scope employed support workers to use oral health promotion to facilitate understanding of this important health issue.
3. Build the capacity of general dental practitioners to more confidently address the needs of people with disability in the area of preventative oral health care.

Supported Decision Making within Scope Services – An analysis of the level of decision making autonomy for people using Scope services

This project plans to focus on the decision making of people who use Scope services with a view to guide policy, procedures and training within the organisation. The project will focus on answering the following questions:
What decisions are the people we support needing to make about their lives? What communication support is needed to ensure these decisions are made as autonomously as possible? What are the barriers around autonomous decision making (eg. conflict with duty of care, conflict with OH&S, lack of effective communication system, concerns around risk taking)? How effective is the supported decision making model developed by Scope?

Scope and Women’s Health East Health Promotion/Capacity Building Project

 

Research to test the best way to build the capacity within women’s health organisations, initially focusing on capacity building work with Women’s Health East to develop Health Promotion inclusive of Women with Disabilities. The research is also designed to explore the best way to build the capacity within Scope to incorporate Health Promotion into its work.

Use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication in Early Childhood Intervention

Research to explore knowledge and practices of speech pathologists working in early childhood services in relation to supporting children with complex communication needs and language delays.

Outcomes Measurement

Research with international implications to develop suitable methods for outcomes measurement and a framework to define relevant outcomes.

 

Mid 2010

Developing Effective Outcome Measures for Early Childhood Intervention Services (ECIS) - Specialist Services Southern Region

Research to identify outcomes achieved in early childhood services and the level of family centred practice in those services. The research also explores the factors affecting implementation of transdisciplinary practice.

Mid 2009

Measuring Outcomes in Specialist Services

An outcome measures tool has been developed to measure the degree to which people with a disability are able to achieve the goals that they request support from specialist services to achieve. Phase 2 of this project involves a formal research project to use the tool to measure outcomes and conduct external validation.

 

Mid 2008

The Bridging Project: Development and trial of an accessible depression assessment for people with complex communication needs

The aim of this pilot study (part of larger The Bridging Project) is to explore the communication characteristics of a new tool designed for people with complex communication needs for the clinical assessment of depression and related mood disorders, and its comparison against an established screening tool for depression in the general community, the Beck Depression Inventory.

Communicating Pain

The aim of this project is to develop and pilot a pain assessment tool for use with people with disability, in particular those who have complex communication needs.
