Communication Access

Communication Access SymbolCommunication Access is when everyone can get their message across.

What’s it all about?

Communication Access is about communicating with people who do not use speech or have speech that is difficult to understand. It makes everyone in the community aware that they can play a role in removing communication barriers.

Communication access is about anyone being able to go into shops and services and know that people will:

  • treat them with dignity and respect
  • talk directly to them and not the person with them
  • give them time to get their message across
  • listen to their message
  • be willing to use other methods of communicating

Other things that contribute to Communication Access include:

  • written information in an easy to read format
  • clear signs to help people find their way around
  • hearing loops and TTY telephones
  • user friendly technology

However the most important thing is for all of us to be aware that communication is a two-way process. Both people need to take some responsibility for making the communication effective and successful.
