Scope’s Inclusive Gym Program
Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon people who Scope support head down to Knox Leisureworks to enjoy a work out.
Knox Leisureworks, in partnership with Scope, have created an inclusive gym program ‘Enable Fitness’ for people with a disability. The program is run twice a week for people that Scope supports at the Knox Day and Lifestyles Centre.
The Knox Leisureworks gym tailors the program to the needs and abilities of the people Scope support. The aim of the program is to help people with a disability improve their fitness, coordination and building physical strength in a safe, supportive and welcoming environment.
Volunteers, who are organised through Eastern Recreation Leisure Services (ERLS) in Bayswater, come along to each session to assist the people Scope support in using all of the gym equipment. Their help and support has been essential to the success of the program.
Penny Clough, a person Scope supports at the Knox Day and Lifestyles Centre, attends the program twice a week. “It’s really good to keep me going, it’s really good for my Horse riding. It makes me more flexible and keeps me fit. I say, either use it or lose it! I love doing my exercise and I know everyone there and they’re really nice people. We need more volunteers to help so more people can join the gym,” said Penny.
Scope really appreciates the support from Knox Leisureworks and the volunteers for making this program possible. This initiative represents a giant step in creating more inclusive communities for people with a disability.
The Enable Fitness program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 2:30pm at Knox Leisureworks, Tormore Road, Boronia.
