Haileybury College Wins Disability Services Award
Haileybury College has been recognised for its outstanding volunteer work at Scope’s Montclair Family Respite in Glen Waverley.
The senior students from Bradshaw House in Keysborough, who visited the respite once a week during the school term, were presented with the annual statewide Scope Volunteer Award at the Telstra Dome on Friday, November 7.
During their visits, the students provided support and entertainment for the children, and a lot of the children looked to the boys as their big brothers.
Not only did they provide this support on a weekly basis, but they also fundraised for the service throughout the year.
The college recently presented the respite with a cheque for $1500.
College principal Derek Scott said he was delighted with the award, which acknowledged the volunteer work of Haileybury students.
``Haileybury has a strong commitment to building better communities. We encourage all our students to be involved in volunteer work which teaches the value of social justice and community pride,’’ Mr Scott said.
``We are delighted to support Scope’s Montclair Family Respite.’’
Montclair Family Respite Coordinator Sandra Vergara said the students’ contribution made a huge difference to the lives of the children.
``We feel very privileged to have such dedicated students attend our service. They are wonderful with the children and look beyond the disability to see each person for who they really are,’’ Ms Vergara said.
``We look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come.’’
