Communication Access - Introducing the newest access symbol within Australia

For immediate release: Friday 19th August 2011

The Communication Access symbol is the newest access symbol in Australia.

1 in 500 people in Victoria have communication disabilities.

In 2009 Scope’s Communication Resource Centre led the development of a symbol to represent Communication Access.

People with communication disabilities have identified many barriers that exist in our communities which prevent them from fully participating in community life. They would like to engage with communities and services where:

  • People communicate directly with them
  • They are given time to get their message across
  • They can use the method of communicating that is suitable for them

To display the Communication Access Symbol, places, businesses and services must meet specific criteria for communication access.

To help break down the barriers people with communication difficulties face, the Communication Access Network will be hosting 13 regional information forums across Victoria between August –December 2011.These forums will provide resources and information on communication access. We are also  launching the Communication Access Symbol on the 17th of  November this year.

For further information about this project or about information forums being held in your region please contact Scope’s Communication Resource Centre on 03 9843 2000, 1800 888 824 or e-mail crc@scopevic.org.au.

We believe in a world in which everyone can communicate.
