Bushrangers Ride for Scope
A GROUP of Geelong cyclists’ peddle power in the Murray to Moyne has raised about $8000 for Scope. The Brocka Bushrangers conquered 520km of hills and bad weather over the 24-hour cycling event last weekend to fundraise for Scope’s Brocka Ave Respite service.
Geelong resident Edward ``Ned’’ Kelly, whose daughter has cerebral palsy and accesses the respite, has been riding in the fundraiser for the past 14 years.
``The course is not too bad, it's the weather that determines how challenging it gets,'' Mr Kelly said.
``One year it was about 34 degrees when we left, then it dropped to minus seven degrees during the night when we got to Ararat,'' he said.
``We all enjoy the cycling aspect so we take the good with the bad.’’
The Brocka Bushrangers has raised up to $8000 for the Scope respite at each event over recent years.
Scope Barwon South-West Residential Coordinator Erica Bennett said the funds had been used to enhance the home comforts offered to clients.
She said some of the items that had been bought included televisions, recliners and shower chairs.
``It is amazing how generous this team has been with its time, money and energy. Their support over the years has made a huge difference to the level of home comforts that have been able to offer clients. After all, Brocka Ave is a home away from home for those who access the service,'' Mrs Bennett said.
Scope's Brocka Avenue Respite provides short break accommodation for people with disabilities.
Scope is a leading Victorian not-for-profit disability service provider, supporting more than 7500 adults and children with disabilities.
Its services in the Geelong region include Shannon Park Adults, Calkendren Respite and Recreational, Educational Adult Programs (REAP).
