Scope Young Ambassadors Puppetry Project

Students holding puppetsStudents at St Andrew’s Primary School in Clayton South encouraged their peers to “see the person, not the disability”, as part of the Scope Young Ambassadors Program (SYA).

The Year 5 students completed the Scope Young Ambassadors program prior to participating in the Puppetry Project.

To share the message of “see the person, not the disability”, they wrote stories that explored the themes of disability, diversity and bullying.

They then made puppets to perform their stories to their peers, teachers and prep buddies.

The puppetry performances were a lot of fun and a great success, with groups of students performing their plays which captured their understanding of respect and acceptance of others.

“The preps should learn that people with a disability can do the same things as other people, they just have to find another way to do it”, said Nitin, one of the students involved in the Scope Young Ambassadors Program.

Scope Young Ambassadors is a youth development, applied learning program available to schools throughout Victoria.

The unique program aims to create more inclusive communities through disability awareness, education and connections with the community.

Over the last year, SYA ran 142 programs in primary and secondary schools across Victoria and reached more than 3,500 students.
