Making Headlines

Thomas Banks on benchI was born with a mild case of Cerebral Palsy, but I don’t let it affect the person that I am. I’m a fun, outgoing, wild person and above all, I love a laugh. Once you’re my friend, you’ll always be my friend. I’m that type of caring person.

I had my own book published at the age of 16, which was about my life as a person with a disability. It was aimed at people with disabilities to inspire them to do more with their lives, not just sit down on the couch or lock themselves away because they have their disabilities.

I have sold 800 copies of the book and amazed that it’s still in demand, but I originally got 1000 printed. I have sold them at markets, on the train, in cafes and I keep telling everyone about it.

Now nearly 19, I’m getting into the journalism aspect of writing. I love it, I want to be the first journalist with a disability working in the mainstream journalism industry.

It’s really important for me. I’m living proof that good things will happen if you put in hard work and have determination. I don’t give up when I have a barrier in my life, just find a way to step over it and move on with my life.

I have been accepted into Ballarat Uni to do professional writing and editing, which I am really excited about. It’s the first step in a bid to achieve my dream to become the first journalist with a disability working in the mainstream journalism industry.

I have completed work experience placements at The Age, The Ballarat Courier and Colac Herald, so that I can get my name out there and it will be easier for me when it comes time to look for a job.

I have worked at Youthcentral since August 2008, which is a Victorian Government website for young people.

I have written many articles for the website and they are available for people to read at www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/thomas if they wish.

I take small retreats to Melbourne to get away from my writing work, where I go out and have a few drinks with friends. It gives me a chance to unwind so that I can return to work with a fresh mind.
